After having four of their songs featured in the BBC TV drama Waterloo Road, the band are finally receiving the credit and acclaim they have deserved since starting out in 2007. The release of their 11-track album “Molehills out of Mountains” will increase the five-piece bands fan-base even further. With a Cathedral-esque start on the first track, “Cry For The City” you realise that this is an album which has been worked on and fine-tuned to create something to listen to and enjoy for years to come. The harmonies and quality writing is continuous throughout, with superb story-telling in “Don’t Be Scared 48”, ”Constitution Failed”, ”Like Lovers Do” and “Powerful Pill”. The band also have the ability to lift the tempo and have you foot-tapping along to “London Road” and “I Am Clay” while, “The Waltz” is a track which has a familiar feel to it even on the first listen and is sure to be a WM classic in the years to come and the track “Caught Between Seasons” will have audiences singing along at every gig throughout the UK. PATSY MATHESON - STORIES OF ANGELS AND GUITARS

Two years ago Patsy Matheson had a vision of an album, one with no deadline, no pre-planned list of songs, basically a blank canvass to produce something unique. The result is “Stories of Angels & Guitars” which enables Patsy to paint evocative and tender textured pictures with such descriptive lyrics. The angelic harmonic feel is evident from the first track “Under Your Wing” with harmonies which carry you along, and yet still allows Patsy’s impeccable vocals to shine through, before gently taking you onto a more laid-back lounge-feel track in “No Angel”. Love and emotions feature heavily throughout the album with every emotional pore being exposed throughout “Adoption” and “If You Ask Me” (which is my own personal favourite track of the album) and the feeling of missing in “Hotel Rooms”. The feel of the first track returns with the perfectly balanced vocals on “So The Same”, before a slightly faster pace is provided with “Hundred Guitars”, which like the following track, “Shining Silver”, complete with a haunting beginning is classic Patsy Matheson. The combination of mandolin intertwined with Patsy’s wonderful vocals provide a very special experience with “Water is over the Weir” before an incredible finale with “Sylvia Jean” which is a moving history and love story rolled into one and provides a fitting end to a very special album. From start to finish Patsy fourth solo album is like an expensive claret, smooth, rich and velvety which takes the listener into a warm glow of musical heaven

THE HOP HAILS ANGELO PALLADINO

With its arched red brick ceiling and an eager audience, the Hop had the ambience of a downtown American Blues/Rock bar as Angelo burst in to his set with the fans favourite “Two Crows”. Another couple of tracks from his much-acclaimed album “Blood, Blues and Bad Dreams” soon followed with “Midnight” and “Just Can’t Sleep” which worked in well with some of his unrecorded work and “Another Mystery Train” from his recently released EP “Broken Hearts Still Beat”. Angelo’s song-writing has a feel of Johnny Cash in the storytelling, with support for the downtrodden and out of luck people who still have the fight to battle on, while his stage presence is Britain’s answer to Bruce Springsteen in full-flow. His rendition of “Personal Jesus” had the crowd whooping with delight, as Angelo showed the skill and quality which almost made the brickwork weep in a performance which shone as brightly as the spotlights above. An incredible set ended with another all-time favourite in “Long Dark Of The Night” as Angelo created a “buzz” which very few performers can ever dream of attaining. Factory Street Studios and Yorkshire Gig Guide have teamed up bringing to Bradford an exciting series of musical nights featuring a mix of bands and open mic floor spots where performers and bands of all genres can come together and share. This is a great opportunity for new performers to gain experience in a friendly, fun musical community and for established artists to try out new songs. A place to enjoy music, feel good and have fun.

The evening will be held at Factory Street Studios and Factory Street is a not-for-profit organisation with initiatives that support the local community through artistic musical initiatives. The open mic/jam music evenings offer musicians a great opportunity to develop and share their music in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
The first night in the series, Tuesday December 27th will be full of festive fun featuring The Troubadors and Chris Martin “The Man in the Hat”. The Troubadors are rousing, passionate and uplifting performers and this acoustic West Yorkshire band is not to be missed. Music with heart and soul is the force that is The Troubadors. Fan of the Troubadors, Mike Harding BBC 2, recently said they are “real good stuff”. They will be supported by Bluesman and raconteur Chris Martin “The Man in a Hat”. Chris Martin says of himself, “Musically I‟m a blues shouter and guitarist, playing slide and finger style and also lap style. Throughout my long and varied musical career, I‟ve both thrilled and puzzled audiences the world over (well round Yorkshire)”. He may well talk more than he plays, but whatever happens you‟re bound to have a good time. Our second evening Tuesday January 3rd sees in the New Year with brilliant Bradford Band „The Rudiments‟. The Rudiments indie sounds have a rock „n‟ roll edge drawing influence from a wide variety of bands and artists with energetic live performances that thrills audiences.

Following the release and subsequent high praise of their first EP last year, The Artists have now released their latest four-track offering titled “Magic Words”. The five-piece band consisting of Luke Thompson (Rhythm guitar & Lead vocals), Mitch Thompson (Lead guitar & vocals), Tom Webster (Percussion & drums) Louis Appleyard (Bass guitar) and Jack Mattison (Keyboard & vocals) combine perfectly to maintain and even surpass the “Trick or Treating” EP of 2010. The EP kicks-off with a lively start with “Here comes the storm” which allows each musician an equal opportunity to help deliver a clever and very rounded track. Track two “Forced to follow” is a very vocally powered track, although again, it allows the music to shine through the quality and strength of the unstrained vocals, before moving effortlessly on to a lighter feel with “Magic words”, which bounces along and gives the audience the chance to join in and be part of something special. The final track “Show me the way” shows the diversity of this up and coming back with a track which could easily be mistaken for a Beautiful South original, one can almost see Paul Heaton nodding in appreciation! LISA MARIE GLOVER "LIVE" AT THE HOP REVIEW

Playing solo at a venue normally experiencing bands of many genre and volume, can be a daunting experience for a female singer-songwriter, but Lisa Marie Glover rose to the challenge and wowed the audience at the Hop in Leeds last Sunday. With a set highlighting her engaging stage presence and immense ability, it included tracks from her recently released album “Einzelkind”, with “The First Place”, “Mad Mary” and “Lost Your Way” all of which blended in perfectly with covers of “Black Coffee” and “You Don’t Know Me” and her other well written compositions of “I Was Right” and “Jasper and Annabella”. Although influenced by Nina Simone, Eddie Reader and Joni Mitchell it is Lisa’s personality and the sheer substance she gives each song which separates her from many other modern-day singers. A talented songstress who is going to entertain music audiences wherever she plays for many years to come.

ASHES EP REVIEW

The immediate power and energy of the band set the Rock juices flowing with the opening track “High”, which demonstrates the control and vigour of the instrument-playing and frontman Andy’s impressive vocals, which at times sound Daltrey-esque through to a lilt towards Paul Rogers on other occasions. It’s easy to imagine the second track, “Small Town Anthem” being the bands stadium encore which has a perfect beat to get the audience on full throttle. The pace quickens further with a high impact track titled “Massive Antics” which demonstrates great technical ability and enables the listener to foot-tap like its going out of fashion. While many “indie” bands fall into the trap of trying to blast every note on every track, Ashes are a band who can lower the volume when required, and enable them to get the songs storyline across without any noticeable dip in quality as shown in the final two tracks titled “More Lines Than I Deserve” and “10,000 Satellites”. Whilst the band has obvious influences, they still create something unique and fresh throughout an EP which can mix it with the best Rock bands around. My advice is to listen to the EP and catch the band “live” and you will soon realise that this is a band that are the complete package.

Sleeping Giant is the new single from Leeds based, alt-country 5 piece March of Dimes - a 4 minute trans-country drive, based on all the experiences within. Released through Hope House Records on 3rd October 2011, it serves as a taster of the great new album the band are working on,
due out next spring.
Following their last release, the well received and loved 'From Those Who Were There' EP, this single finds March of Dimes considering issues of strength, resilience, reflection and self awakening - all tied together by a road trip that Dimes members Jonathan and Cat took together across Canada
with ex-Dimes guitarist Robin. It conjures a blend of alt.country and Americana - Fleetwood Mac, The Decemberists, R.E.M, The Acorn, Wilco - with great English bands like The Smiths, The Cure and James.
Lead singer Jonathan Moss says, ‘This song represents a time of distance, healing, scenery and resolution. Following a hectic summer of exhibitions and events, Cloth Cat have just put the finishing touches to the autumn programme of courses which they will be running around Leeds from the week beginning 10th October and which will be:

Introduction To Guitar (for total beginners)
Developing Your Guitar Playing (Intermediate)
Sing YOUR Song (Vocal Development)

All the courses are 10 weeks in length (one session per week) and are FREE to those who are claiming any means tested benefits (although there's a one off payment of £3 which is an admin charge to the WEA). If you aren't claiming benefits it works out at £40 for the whole course.

The album is a credit to an incredible artist, who takes the listener on a musical journey of the highest quality, starting with superb musical depth with “The First Place” and continues to push the boundaries throughout the CD. With interwoven and well thought out styles with ”Lost Your Way”, to wonderful story-telling, and high anticipation of what the next line of lyrics will bring during ”Self Destruct”, before Lisa captures an angelic feel in “Grey”, and your expectations continue to rise and yet the quality never disappoints. GET READY TO ROCK AT WICKET FEST!

MOVE over Leeds Festival because another rock event is taking place over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

The first Wicket Fest is happening at Morley Cricket Club on Sunday, August 28 and as well as hosting a line-up of great bands it will be raising money for two charities - Help For Heroes and Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.

The day promises to have something for everyone with a family fun day turning into a much heavier rock affair later in the evening.

Local actress Diane Harrison, who has appeared in Coronation Street and Shameless, has been lined up as MC for the event, cricket club member Ryan Dowse will be DJing and Stagecoach stage school and Street Beat Scene dance group will be keeping the crowds entertained in between acts. Sarah James will be keeping the children busy with acting classes and games.

The full line-up has been confirmed and the day will kick off with tribute band Take That and Scream followed by Sarah James, Skyline, Gemma Hopton, Dylan Brierley, Elliotts Incentive, Dragen, Honeycomb Love, Reverbed and the headliners, rockers King Nothing.

Iraq war veteran Simon Brown will be opening the festival at 1pm.

ALICE OSTAPJUK - HUSH...ITS NO SECRET

After listening to Alice Ostapjuk’s debut EP, its hard to believe that it was only in April 2009 that she began teaching herself the guitar and began her solo career, such is the quality of her musicianship. Her unique voice, and lyrics which keeps the listener interested in the story being told throughout Sam’s Secret, shows a refreshing new talent has arrived on the music-scene. Paper Planes gives Alice the chance to prove she is willing to take chances during her songs with a surprise mid-track shift to percussion, which makes you listen even closer in the anticipation of what direction she’ll move to next. At the end of the wonderful track “The Chase”, the only disappointment for the listener is that this is only a 3-track EP and not a 13-track album. A great debut EP from an artist who looks destined to scale the musical heights in record time.

THE LEEDS MUSIC HISTORY EXHIBITION

A local music and education charity is hoping to hit the right note with the people of Leeds, when it opens a unique event showcasing the city's exciting music scene this month.

Cloth Cat Studios, which is dedicated to improving people's lives through music in the area, is providing a rare opportunity to delve into the past at the Leeds Music History Exhibition, which will take place at Leeds Town Hall between Friday 12th and Saturday 27th August.

The exhibition is free to the general public who will be able to sample the eclectic range of musical activity founded in the city through displays of photos and other memorabilia collected over the last 50 years.

Held during the Leeds Fringe Festival, there will also be a one-off gig at Brudenell Social Club on Friday 19th August, featuring some of the bands who have been successful over the years including The Chris Reed Unit (from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry) and Nights On Mars featuring Philip Brennan from The Three Johns and Fiona Gregg from The Parachute Men .

The Leeds music scene has been a long and varied one, from the crooners of the 50s and 60s to the explosion of Punk and Rock in the 1970s, which led to guitar bands forming all over the city; and the Goth days of the early 80s through to the current day with local bands the Kaiser Chiefs and The Pigeon Detectives topping the charts.

The idea behind the exhibition is to celebrate the vast array of bands and musicians, along with promoters, DJs, shops, studios and producers, who have had an impact on the culture within the city as well as on a wider basis.

Mike Jolly, project co-ordinator, Cloth Cat, said: "We felt that a celebration of Leeds music was long overdue. There have been some fantastic performers to come out of the area over the years and this exhibition will give people an opportunity learn more about the local music scene as well as, we hope, rekindle some memories.

"There have also been many unsung heroes who have played a major role in defining local music culture and the resulting work of this project will give an insight in to the heritage of the city. We're also hoping to inspire a whole new generation of local bands."

BACKGROUND TO THE EVENT:
At 9 weeks of age, Ilkley boy Amos Harker underwent a 7-hour emergency operation to save his life due to a liver condition called Biliary Atresia. This disease is present from birth and its cause is unknown. Now a year old, thanks to the work of Ward 12 at Leeds General Infirmary, Amos has made a fantastic recovery and continues to inspire everyone he meets with his strength and happiness. Unfortunately there is a chance Amos will be one of the many babies who despite the initial surgery
will require a full liver transplant in the next few years of life.

In thanks to Ward 12, and in support of the Children’s Liver Disease Foundation who research diseases including biliary atresia, Amos’ family and friends created the Fundraiser in aid of the two organisations.

The power of Steve’s vocals are demonstrated fully on the wonderful acoustic “Going Down To The Devil”, while some powerful and heavy guitar-work combines with a sound reminiscent of a US Marines marching song on the bonus band track of “Work Hard For My Baby” which finishes off an impressive EP from the Sheffield-based singer-songwriter. GUITAR WIZARD TO REVEAL HIS TRICKS

West Yorkshire's own Jon Gomm, described by Acoustic Magazine as "One of the world's most gifted and inspirational guitar players", will be taking a break from his touring which has seen him visit Germany, Italy, Holland and Austria so far this year, to give a special masterclass on his guitar playing in Bradford this weekend.

The special workshop, which is being held at Factory Street Studios on Saturday June 4th 2011, is open to all acoustic guitarists from beginners to advanced. "My playing style is quite unusual, involving percussive techniques and two-handed styles, so advanced players might still find themselves going back to basics!", Jon told us.

As well as demonstrating these cutting edge new ways of playing the instrument, there will be an open question and answer session, and Jon will be willing to share his expertise and secrets on all aspects of music from songwriting and music theory to making your living as an independent musician. "I'll answer questions on anything really! Except football and girlfriend trouble."

Factory Street have hosted workshops in the past, and are hoping to become a hub for special musical masterclasses in the area, giving people a rare chance to gain insight and instruction from world-class professional performers.

Imagine being in an underground Blues club where ZZ Top and Tom Waites have joined forces and you would be in the presence of The Blind Dead McJones Band. Their first official CD “Back To School Blues” highlights a refreshing individuality throughout the 35 minute adventure into the world of this Leeds-based band, featuring “Big” Ben Slack (vocals & guitar), Steven Nixon (drums) and Andy Johnson (bass). Starting with the quirky opener “Registration” the band then crank up the sound with “Hang On There Boys” with some superb guitar work included. With lyrics which keep you interested as your feet keep constantly tapping, “Today Was A Good Day” is sure to be a fans’ favourite, before “Tired” brings in a deeper musical feel which compliments the lyrics perfectly. Being “Haunted” will have you head-banging, foot-tapping, air-guitaring while you do a bit of a boogie during the first 2 minutes, thankfully a slower minute gives you time to get your breath back, before off you go again for the final minute of this pulsating song. After the previous exertions, the band move on to a purer Blues feel with “Good Scratch Boogie” which will have the Blues fraternity nodding in appreciation, following on from there, the band kick-on once again with the title track, "Back to School Blues" and although the track lasts for over 8 minutes, never during that time do you become bored with it, which is a compliment to the professionalism of the band. Finally a celebration to confectionary with “Cake with a Spade”, finishes an album which proves that there will definitely be plenty of “Good Days” for this unique band.

SONG-WRITING COURSE AT FSS WITH SHAUN T HUNTER

Following on from the successful taster song writing session Factory Street welcome back Shaun Hunter with a 4 part workshop which will aim to be inspiring and creative to enable songwriters to work on your song writing skills and help guide you through temporary blocks.

Shaun's unique song writing vision and wonderful live performances has resulted in a deal working closely with Steven Machat, he of the New York based company Machat & Machat, who have managed Leonard Cohen & Phil Spector and more recently artists such as Seal and Peter Gabriel. Machat was one of the original founders of the WOMAD festival.

The four sessions will focus on...

1) lyrics and melody plus opening up yourself to all possibilities so the song writing process can begin, overview and philosophy of song writing. projecting and ably connecting with your voice.
2) chord structures/voicing’s/alternate tunings. performance tips for live work and reducing stress and anxiety in the studio and recording process.
3) magic starting points/structure, styles of writing, looking at the way different writers approach their work from Leonard Cohen to Radiohead....what makes a great song?
4) finalising, witnessing all the groups creations, intensive Q&A session on anything that remains unanswered!

This isn't an exclusive or exhaustive list, Shaun believes in the elements of spontaneity within any workshop and song writing particularly is an accepted form of alchemy, hence observations questions or queries will be allowed to flourish for sections within the framework of each of the 4 sessions.

END OF AN ERA - THE FINAL CA GIG

After three and a half years of promotions, Cool Acoustics brought the final curtain down with a farewell gig at its Royal Park Cellars home last week. After many memorable gigs and 2 DVDs, the concept which brought a who’s who of acoustic acts to the renowned venue, went out in a blaze of glory. First on stage was folk-singer Heather Woodhead making her first appearance for CA and accompanied by Alison Battye on flute. Her experience shone through the traditional folk songs with a voice, which was at times angelical before changing to hauntingly impressive, with a highlight being a memorable rendition of “Blooming Heather” which was enjoyed by the captive audience. Jenni Noyes followed and gave as polished a performance as any witnessed over the past CA promotions. Her controlled vocals complimented her solid guitar playing throughout a set, which included a topical track titled “War” which contrasted well with the love song “Sleepwalking”. Co-host of LSRFM’s Folk Off programme Natasha Johansson, then entertained the ever-increasing audience with a collection of her own renditions including an autobiographical “365 Reasons to Smile” and an inpromptu sing-a-long to the ABBA classic “Supertrouper” which added to the already memorable evening, A triumphant return to the Royal Park Cellars venue was then provided by Amelia Orgill, who, since her last performance at the venue has matured into an even more enthralling singer-songwriter. With tales of mermaids and Cornish folk-tales to entertain, Amelia looks destined to be a leading light in the acoustic/folk world for many years to come. It was fitting that the final act of the Cool Acoustics journey, was provided by two of the brightest young musicians on the circuit today, as teenagers Sarah Horn and James Cudworth, took the evening to an uplifting finale with a set including Scottish Reels and Jigs and a foot-stamping end to a wonderful night of classic acoustic brilliance.

The Leeds music historians in years to come, will hopefully acknowledge all the hard work and effort made by CA during one of the most demanding recession hit era’s for the “Live Music” fraternity. Thanks for the memories CA, you will be missed.

After a Christmas Party held at the Call Lane Social Club, the SS was back at its spiritual home and better than ever. The ambiance and enjoyment at the Verve on an SS night, is something special to behold and should be sampled whenever possible. LeeSun, opened the evenings entertainment and again proved why she was described on this website in September 2009, as a unique performer and songwriter. Starting and finishing her set showing her keyboard skills as she produced a set outlining her talents and containing songs influenced by her strong family values. The Roman Empire, armed with a back catalogue of 3 albums occupied the stage next with an array of musical instruments which included ukulele, banjo, acoustic guitar & keyboard. Songs flowed from the duo with diverse influences including, Lighthouse keepers’ hobbies, Vikings, the world’s strongest man television programme, topiary and even a science lesson thrown in for good measure! The harmonies and laid back humour left an indelible mark on the audience throughout. On SS debut and topping the bill was the 5 piece Jon Palmer Acoustic band, who produced a stunning set which left many in the venue exclaiming “Oh My God” what a band. The songwriting talents of Jon Palmer shone through with the autobiographical “Brown Eyed Northern Girl” a pub crawl through Otley with “Another Friday Night” and the lust of a “Vampire Lover” settled in well with the gospel “Meet Me At The Station” a trip to Alabama with “Oh Susannah” and finishing off with “Pay Me My Money Down” to top the night off. QUIET REBELLION - STILL TALKING SCRIBBLE - Released 7th Feb

Quiet Rebellion is the brainchild, and dramatic musical project of Award winning songwriter Shaun T Hunter who is based in The Ridings, Yorkshire.

Turning his back upon a potentially lucrative production deal in the late 90s Shaun chose to break free from the larger corporate record industry, seeking to plough his own musical furrow, and forge his own path, resulting in releasing a series of highly acclaimed and unique albums.

Now on his latest album ‘Still Talking Scribble’ he has taken things further. Not only has he recorded and produced the album himself in a variety of unusual locations (from a reputedly haunted Industrial Mill...which served to be the setting for a spontaneous reinterpretation of the Springsteen standard 'Dancing In The Dark' which makes it on to the album as a bonus track to rooms with a view), but he is also the sole player of all instruments on the record - this was not due to any control ethic but by only using what he had at his disposal. It was out of necessity as a result of losing 'band members' who had been part of the house concert based release 'Thinnest Hopes Magnified ' from Autumn 2009...this new vigour and vision of creating textures and rhythms solely consisting of just him and a loop pedal would become the foundation that ' Still Talking Scribble ' would be based upon. By creating every single CD cover individually, passing the sleeve design, a commissioned piece of art by local artist Damian Clark through colour filters to create a unique work of art.
Shaun describes the whole process as ‘Ethereal D.I.Y’ a description he stumbled upon rather than consciously made taking 2 very different genres, creating musically a ‘dreamesque spectral song collection’ while at the same time single-handidly creating rhythms and textures to all aspects of his live work and this album creation.

Musically in ‘Still Talking Scribble’ Shaun has released another startlingly honest work, as it takes us on a journey from the darkest corners of the mind, to the deepest recesses of the soul. For further information about this stunning album please check out the following websites below:

Thankfully in an era where the shallow and tacky side of music is promoted with vigour, its refreshing to listen to someone who illustrates how music should be written and performed. Dan Wilde’s debut album “This Is The Place” highlights what a fine songwriter Dan is, with tracks which are poignant, reflective and has the listener nodding in agreement, with the statements and thoughts throughout the 12 track album. Although the first track “Nearest I Have To A Home” is probably my favourite, the rest of the album is of such quality that it never disappoints, and many other tracks run it very close. The listener can easily identify with songs such as “Cold” and “Unkind” and if/how we could have done things differently in our lives, to a heart-warming feel with “Opened My Eyes” and the memorable final track “It Hurts To Reminisce”. If there is any justice in the music world of 2011, then Dan will receive the recognition this thoughtful and talented singer-songwriter deserves.

DAVE PILLA EP REVIEW

The EP starts with Dave at his storytelling best with “Where Did All The Time Go?”, which asks a question which everyone asks, but few have the eloquence to give an answer. Dave then moves on to a more experimental track in “Waves and Tides” which makes the listener concentrate on both Dave’s vocals and what is happening in the background producing an interesting and unique mix. “Lions Share” allows for both solo and harmonic interludes with neither outperforming the other to produce a balanced feel throughout, before the final track titled “In My Sole” intertwines the piano and meaningful lyrics, which carries you along to a fitting finale on a very impressive debut EP.

STUART NEGUS - FEAST

The eagerly anticipated debut album titled “Feast” from Stuart Negus, has now been officially released. When an album has guest appearances by Theo Gilmore, Michael McGoldrick and John Kirkpatrick then you know this is going to be something very special. Stuart has been regarded as one of the North of England’s finest song-writers for some time, and was the driving force behind the successful “Songwriters Circle” evenings in Yorkshire a few years ago. The range of Stuart’s talents can be seen within the opening two tracks, starting with “May I Walk” which has a Johnny Cash “Hurt” feel to it, before the more upbeat and foot-tapping “The Only One” follows smoothly along as it emphasizes an addiction we have all had at some point. The start is just a prelude as Stuart takes the listener on a wondrous acoustic journey of reflection and hope, the evocative “Autumn Girl” makes you actually taste and feel the Autumnal lyrics, while “New Beginning” is exactly that, with a picture of hope and inspiration described in Stuarts own inimitable way. Everyone will have their own particular favourite track, as everyone will have a personal acknowledgement of what the lyrics of “Walls” means to them. Like Monet or Constable painted pictures with oils, Stuart paints pictures with richly textured lyrics on this masterpiece of an album which I cannot praise high enough. THE album of 2010.

KATIE OWEN - COMIN' ON STRONG

While comparisons with Christina Auguilera are valid, Katie Owen’s voice and song-writing can stand alone on their own merits. The debut album titled “Comin On Strong” from the Southampton-based singer, is testament to a bright new talent within the British music-scene. While many singers would be tempted to shout through the power-vocals of “Putcha Finger On The Record”, “Terrified” and “OMG”, Katie remains in complete control. At times with a feel of Whitney Huston’s ballad-style to the more upbeat 1990’s Cher, Katie also moves effortlessly through the percussion-based “Give It A Rest” and the bouncy-feel of “Don’t Wanna Stop” to my own particular favourite, ”Something From You” with its unique sound and which allows Katie’s pure vocals to shine through. Although sure to be a hit with both chart and R & B fans, there are tracks which will appeal to fans of many different genres. Katie Owen, definitely one to follow in 2011.

Sadly young bands come and go with incredible regularity, however one band that definitely could buck the trend is Leeds-based “The Artists” who have just launched their debut EP titled “Trick or Treating”. Consisting of Luke Thompson (Vocals & Guitar), Jack Mattison (Backing vocals & Keyboard), Mitch Thompson (Lead guitar), Louis Appleyard (Bass guitar) and Tom Webster (Drums), their offering has a freshness and vibrancy, which coupled with well thought out lyrics from the start of the EP title track and through the remaining three tracks, gives each an individualistic musical feel and texture. Impressive would be an understatement for an EP and band that will make the local and beyond, music-scene sit up, stand up and take notice.

There is a common belief, that if you asked Gary Stewart to play a gig in your garage, he would, and the performance would be as polished as if he was playing the main stage at Glastonbury, such is his love of music and performing. The release of his debut album “Boy Cries Wolf” emphasizes this fully, as the drive and enthusiasm shines through every song on the 10 track album. Kicking off with a GS classic “Travelling Song” Gary moves on apace with support from an impressive collection of musicians in the form of, Sam Lawrence(accordion,whistle,mandolin), Adam Richards (double bass), India Patel (violin), Martyn Roper (banjo), Ed Dawson (backing vocals,melodica) and Rich Stephenson (backing vocals,bass). The Simon & Garfunkel feel of “Behind the Door” is enhanced by the guest vocals of the superb Ellen Smith, as is “In The Pines” featuring one of Yorkshire’s finest female singer-songwriters Rosie Doonan. To complete the full-circle, the album finishes with two more fan-favourites in the form of “Tripping Holes” and “Bucket of Stars” to leave the listener eagerly pressing the play button immediately the last track finishes, to re-experience an album which produces a level of consistency very few of his peers could hope to match and is a credit to a very talented musician and songwriter. Whether you know any of Gary Stewarts music or not this is a must buy CD.

This reviewer’s personal heaven, of Chrissie Hynde, Hazel O’Connor and Pink rolled into one dynamic and multi-dimensional singer, is achieved with a flourish by Doris as she produces stand-out performances throughout the album. Encapsulating a Celtic feel through her flageolet playing to in your face rockier tracks, all are covered, with her very distinctive sound and style. The quirky and catchy “What Have I Done” stands shoulder to shoulder with my own favourite “Get A Life” which is easily the UK’s answer to Pink’s “So What”, providing ample evidence of the versatility Doris possesses and which has produced one of the most consistent albums to be released this year. In place of calling “The Last Adventure” an album of Prog-Rock, Retro or even Cool Britannia, just call it CLASS and you will not be far wrong.

Chloe was hailed as one of the best acts to be invited to the Sunday Service, and she didn’t disappoint the expectant (in more ways than one!) audience. There cannot be a singer with a more sunnier disposition than Chloe, if she told you the world was about to end, you would leave it with a smile on your face and her enchanting voice in your ears. Her songs, while at times deeply harmonic remained delicately balanced and always in control. Many people present on the night will say in future years, “I Remember” Chloe Leavers playing The Verve.

The Moonshine Five
The range of ages within the band mirrors the ageless boundaries which this band will appeal to. The five-piece band fronted by Adam Wolstenhome, topped the evening with a wonderful and original set. With Ayshea adding vocals to her guitar skills, the set produced a sometimes Springsteen-esque feel to the night, while still maintaining a uniqueness with songs from the lustful “They can’t keep their hands” through to a finale which we can all relate to with “When the money runs out”. A brilliant band to round off a brilliant night’s entertainment.

LEXIE GREEN - TWENTY TEN - CD REVIEW

Within the first three tracks of her debut album “Twenty Ten”, Lexie Green has shown her immense musical range, from Rock to Blues and even a Country-esque feel and sound. The first track “Leave Me Sleep” is sure to be a future crowd participation favourite, with a chorus which carries you along in an enjoyable groove for the remainder of the 11 track album. With a country feel to tack two’s “Just Drive” and the obvious Blues style in “Heartbreak Blues”, and the first-time listener is eagerly waiting to hear what style the next track will produce. The album continues in a Rockier feel in “Fast Cars and Big Guitars” while the Blues is on track again with “Fools Blues” while the foot is tapping consistently to “Mistaken” before a resounding finale with “Everythings Alright”. All the tracks are Lexie’s own compositions, and while lesser talented singers would be overshadowed and lost by the lead guitarist Danny Moore’s outstanding contributions, Lexie has the class and professionalism to remain focused and keep the album flowing consistently. Despite the variation of styles, the quality never diminishes, and her flair and enthusiasm shines throughout, producing a very enjoyable first album, roll on album number two.

LEEDS WOMEN'S AID CHARITY GIG REVIEW

When the exceptionally talented Pippa Lloyd is the opening singer, then you know you are in for a very special music extravaganza. Pippa started the Cool Acoustics Leeds Women’s Aid Charity Gig in fine style, with everyone “Feelin Good” especially after singing her own composition “Hope” which was a poignant reminder of the Charity being supported.

Devon born Amelia Orgill followed Pippa and gave the audience a selection of covers and her own material, including some interesting Cornish folklore. The enjoyable and catchy set provided evidence of a singer who will have a great stage presence in the forthcoming years.

There has been a “Whisper” for some time now regarding the songstress Hannah Trigwell, well this has now been replaced by an almighty roar as this gifted 19 year-old ticks all the boxes for a bright future. Admitting that she was nervous playing solo for the first time in a long while, Hannah showed a professionalism beyond her years and experience. With an EP now available and over 600,000 views of her YouTube videos, Hannah is definitely one to “Follow”.

David Henshaw and friends then took the stage. and the five-piece band produced a compelling set. The impressive range of instruments used, gave each song a rounded feel, which accompanied David’s unique voice to its fullest and had the crowd shouting for more.

Headlining the evening was the Oui Bee & The Jazzbags, and again this took the gig and the audience to yet another musical level. Sat with your eyes closed, you could well have been listening along the Champs-Elysées as the feel of the full and rich bodied sound produced, was evocative of the bands favourite tipple between songs.

Special thanks has to go to Richard Steel for all his charitable efforts and the performers who took part in a memorable fund-raising night.

The first impression you receive of Rory Holl and The Men is one of three guys who have fun and enjoy performing in proper “live” music venues. However it would be wrong to categorise them as nothing more than this, as when these guys start to play, the audience is taken aback by the quality of their performances. The three-piece band based in Leeds, feature Rory as lead singer, ably supported on guitar and backing vocals by Q and drummer CK Thunder. Their play-list includes The Beatles, Pink Floyd and AC/DC to name but a few, each given the RH&TM's individual feel and style. This is a band who enjoy the gigs themselves, but probably not as much as the audience who watch them. A band not to be missed.

Standing out from the plethora of brilliant young “Blues” artists and bands is the multi-talented Dan Hudson and his York-based band. There is a tangible feel of expectancy surrounding him, which radiates a “When” not “If” Dan receives national stature.

The release of their album “Playin’ The Blues“ has increased their rapid rise to prominence amongst the “Blues” community as it showcases the musical tightness and talent throughout the nine-track album. Each member of the band (Dan, lead guitar and vocals, Paul Milek, drums, Jon Getty, rhythm guitar and Chris Backhouse on sax) is an integral part within the parameters of each track.

A simple start with Goin Down Slow, which carefully introduces the rest of the band in a fine bluesy/jazzie ballad. Quicker tempo tracks such as Young Fashioned Ways and Can’t Be Satisfied allow Dan to show his Blues roots and guitarmanship. Classic tracks such as Hoochie Coochie Man and Crossroads are given classic renditions, before Dan shows vocal versatility in showing his Blues emotion while almost talking through Goin’ Away Baby to the foot-tapping Further Up On The Road. The albums final track, Shotgun Blues brings an end to a Blues album which the Blues faithful will thoroughly enjoy.

With a maturity far beyond his years and experience, lead singer Dan Hudson and his Blues Band are about to explode onto the “Blues” music scene during late 2010 and for many years to come.

After a six month sabbatical, one of Leeds’ finest “live” bands are now back gigging again. Their return started recently at Mr Foleys in Leeds where, despite their gig-less few months the band was as polished as ever. With a lead singer (Kerrie) who looks coy before belting out song after song in a crystal glass shattering clarity, to the band members (The brilliant Bassist Helen, Guitar hero’s Dave and Snoopy and dynamic Drummer Graeme) each adding a professionalism which had the venue bouncing and the punters dancing. The classic tracks were there for all to enjoy, including, “Fever,” “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Teenage Kicks” and Blondie’s “One Way Or Another” which allowed the band to do the song justice where many have tried and failed. Brace yourselves as Resurgence are back and better than ever.

Many people will remember Christopher from his days as lead singer in the successful 'The Good Die Young', a band who supported many major acts up until 2008, when the band split up to pursue their own individual careers. Christopher spent 2009 writing his first solo album titled “99c Dreams”, which has now been released with interest and orders from around the world. The 9 track album of acoustic tracks backed by piano and organ is a credit and a fine showcase, for a performer who recorded it all in 2 days and on a limited budget. The quality of the album gives the feel of a 33 minute single, than that of 9 individual songs as the standard never drops, at times a delicate without being weak collection which allows Christopher’s vocals to carry the album along with ease. Personal favourites would be “For So Long,” “Fake Empire” and “Flashbacks” although any of the tracks could be a “favourite of the day” for any individual days listening.

Hee Haw Sessions have announced that they will be supporting and working with the Garforth Arts Festival this year.

The Garforth Arts Festival is an annual festival that takes place over a two week period in June/July in Leeds. Launched in 2005 the festival has grown from strength to strength each year and has hosted a variety of performances including Richard Hawley, Buzzcocks, Kate Rusby, Tony Benn, Chumbawamba, and Eliza Carthy to name a few. There is a big emphasis on the local community and getting involved. This year’s festival sees a whole host of events taking place between 28th June and 10th July. Hee Haw Sessions are hosting two special nights featuring some of their favourite acts over the last couple of years alongside some local young and established Garforth musicians.

Thursday 1st July sees the return of The Croshaw Family (Winners of the Leeds Music Promotions EP of 2009 award) along with local favourite Serious Sam Barrett. Support will also be provided from Garforth Community College students.

MARCH OF DIMES - FROM THOSE WHO WERE THERE

Following their critically acclaimed album “All Intents and Purposes” of late 2008, the highly talented Leeds band, March of Dimes have now released a 6 track EP titled "From Those Who Were There", which showcases once again, the consistently impressive talents of this finely-tuned band. With the added dimension of Cat on vocals, and the odd “quirky” moments holding the listeners attention throughout, this is sometimes a poignant, sometimes foot-tapping CD. All six tracks could be the standard bearer for the band, however in my opinion “Try Never Knowing” is one of the most harmonic and vocally crafted songs I have heard in a very long time. The songwriting and musicianship on show, makes it nigh on impossible for any of the bands peers to equal let alone beat this flawless CD from a very special band.

This is an excellent album from a very talented performer who should dominate the local (and beyond) music-scene for many, many years to come.

Ignore the bands Alternative/Rock/Acoustic description of itself, and replace it with CLASS and you will not be contradicted by anyone who has either seen the band live or listened to their EPs. The five-track CD is a perfect prism of the high quality song-writing, accomplished musicianship and vocal delivery of a band, who through hard work and immense talent, make the most difficult of lyrics or instrument playing appear very smooth and easy. Along with outstanding tracks from the EP, the five-piece band included favourites including “Driving in the dark” and “I am clay” much to the delight of their adoring audience.

Comprising of Lisa Dply Masia and Marina Cristofalo, London-based Lilies On Mars are soon to be touring the UK, which hopefully will include dates in Yorkshire. Their ten track album “Lilies On Mars” is a remarkable insight to two very talented and experimental artists. It would be very difficult to find another album which diversifies genres as much as this album does. A CD with an opening track, Maori Legend, which could be called sci-fi/choral/experimental and ends with a crescendo style finish on X2, and a multitude of musical mixtures in between gives this album uniqueness not heard before. The rollercoaster of styles takes the listener to experimental rockier sounds on “Passing By” to the heavy bassed track “Honourable Horrible Friend” to some wonderful harmonic styles in “Hey, What’s Wrong? Wake up!” “Electric Fits” and “Et Voila” which keeps the listener interested and quizzical as to what will happen next. Hopefully this will not be subjected to a niche market as there is something very fresh and exciting about these songwriters which deserves a wider audience. Should you obtain a copy of the CD then make sure you listen to it until it stops as there is a twist in the tale!

Having seen lead singer Claire at the fledgling stage of her singing career in August 2006 at the Otley Courthouse, her rise since then has been meteoric and her new album “Maslow’s Songbook” takes her to yet another level. With a collection of highly skilled musicians by her side, the new album is a magnificent montage of musical mastery which lasts for 46 minutes, when the listener wishes it would last for 460 minutes. Claire’s poise and deportment which captivates her audiences during her “live” performances, are remarkably replicated throughout the 12 track CD. With the polished performances of Dave Redfearn, Sean O’Leary, Karl Odlum, Colm Mac Con Lomaire and Ronan O’Snodaigh entwined with Claire’s vocals and this is an album to savour. My personal favourites are “Real To Me,” “One In A Million,” “You Win But You Lose” and the final track “Maslow’s Love Story” which finishes the album off spectacularly as a vehicle for Claire’s clear vocals, which never show any sign of straining to reach the highest and most powerful of notes, which is in contrast to her pure and delicate sound of other tracks, evidence enough of a very special talent.

EXOTERIK - BUTTERFLY IN YOUR HAND

The delicacy of the cover comprising, not surprisingly a bufferfly in cupped hands, does not prepare the listener for an album of sheer power and class. The opening tracks of “Reason To Live” and “No Happy Ending” could well be from an established “Gothic” style band with its powerful back-drop of sound. The power-ballad style of “Scream To Be Heard” and “Pressure” also allows the strong vocals of lead singer Anneka Latta to shine through before a return to the style of the opening tracks with “Breakdown” and a rockier pitch with “Start Again” and “Reason In Ruins”. The final tracks highlight the enormous range the band can cover with an acoustic-feel “Uninvited” and the title track “Butterfly In Your Hand” which, in one track exhibits the versatility of a very impressive four-piece band, comprising of vocalist and keyboard player Anneka, guitarist Tom Fay, bassist Darren Townes and drummer Steve Riley. An excellent album from the musically expressive Exoterik.

One band who look destined for a long and successful music career are Lost Transmission, the band have their own distinctive feel throughout an EP which will touch every listener’s musical psyche differently. The track “Levitate” allows vocals and instruments blend effectively to produce a smoothness which is both enduring and inspiring. The rest of the EP includes “Fragments” which has a 1970’s feel but is also innovative at the same time, a Pink Floyd sound in “Bad Seeds” and finishes off with the well thought out track “10,000mph Train Ride” to produce a very classy CD. With each track averaging six minutes plus, these guys definitely give value for money and should be caught “live” at any and every opportunity.
